Personal Statement

I believe that education is the right of every human being. The opportunity to gain skills, think critically and understand ourselves in a positive light so that we may have the chance to fully realize our dreams and aspirations in the future and be positive contributors to a world in need.  We must strive in our schools to banish prejudice, stereotypes and inequality in order to give each and every human being abundant and equal opportunities to flourish in this world.  If we do not work to heal these things we have left our world broken and unjust.  As an art teacher I believe that it is my role to open this dialogue through thoughtful and meaningful curriculum invoking my students to inquire and find the answers needed to solve these issues together.

I think it is important first and foremost to see my students as human beings just like me.   They are diverse individuals whose lives are like a tapestry rich with fibers that are woven from their personal experiences, their home-life, their communities and their culture.  As a teacher I feel it is my responsibility to make students feel safe and cared for in my classroom.  By getting to know them individually and forging relationships of trust I believe that they can learn to their highest potential gaining skills and experience that will potentially have a positive impact on them for the rest of their lives.

Curriculum and instruction is the foundation for opening eyes through dialogue and inquiry.  It is a gateway for learners to find truth in themselves, in their peers and in the world.  Curriculum and instruction is a stepping off point for healing and growth that leads to a better future.  As an art teacher I intend to engage my students in matters that are important and individually tailored for them.  I will create exciting and engaging curriculum that not only takes students through the history and movements of art but also introduces a diverse body of contemporary artists who can relate to the lives and experiences of my students.   I want to involve my students in the learning experience and empower them to be a part of the learning process.  Robert Bullough encapsulates my ideals best when he said “Curriculum should invite; personal experience, human differences, big ideas, social justice, real life experiences, diverse group learning and reflection (2001).

I am thrilled to be an art teacher and have the opportunity to work closely with my peers and administration to strive for the highest quality of education for our students.  An education that impacts lives and grows our young people to be positive contributing citizens to the ever challenged world we live in.  As an art teacher I feel it is my greatest opportunity in life to effect the change I wish to see in the world through stewardship, intellectual spirit, integrity and socially just practices.
